Meet Buttercup, our moovellous Cheesewick market mascot
Buttercup, a Holstein Freisian dairy cow, first came to market during The Big Cheese Weekender in October 2023 and was named through a competition the following month. The heart-churning favourite was BUTTERCUP!
The iconic, mostly black and white cows are the most populous dairy cows due to their high dairy production and are bred worldwide in 160 countries.
Buttercup is ever-ready for her #cheesewick selfie close-up and never says no to a photo op!
Between markets, she resides at the Barley Moo Barn (The Barley Mow Centre) courtesy of Workspace.

Seasonal Celebrations
Each month, the market lends itself to a theme and while they vary, there are some that are fixed in the calendar:

We start the year off on a high with our ‘Alpine Ascent’ in January when we focus on the many cheeses from the French, Italian. Swiss, German, Austrian and Slovenian Alps and all the gooey recipes that are made from them (raclette, fondue, tartiflette, etc.).

The Perfect Pair. In February, the month of love, we play market matchmaker and try to inspire you with unusual matches made in cheese heaven. Our imaginative stall-holders look for opportunities to collaborate to create tasty combinations (kimchi and cheddar toastie anyone?) to tempt your tastebuds beyond the cheese and cracker. We recently sampled Italian cheeses from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy with ten-year-old Balsamic vinegar.

Beyond the May Day celebrations, May is our anniversary month so we break out the bunting and push the cheese borders – celebratory Morris dancing may occur!

October is when we honour and collaborate with the Academy of Cheese, Britain’s professional body for cheese expertise. Whether it’s the Big Cheese Weekender when the Academy does a market take-over or we come together for specialised cheese events. Expect to meet cheesemakers and award-winning affineurs as well as taste some superb cheeses.

The Christmas market in December is perfectly timed for you to create the ultimate cheese board for your big feast as well as chock full of gifting opportunities – one stop foodie shopping!
