What’s new this month – Greek Odyssey Edition
For most of us if asked to make a list of Greek food it would be feta, Greek salad and sticky sweet nutty puddings and perhaps a glass or two of Ouzo. At ‘Cheesewick’ we have learned so much more from Team Maltby & Greek, who have been bringing us memories of their youth, their travels across mainland Greece and the islands since our start three years ago.
Their stall is crammed full of artisan cheeses made with local knowledge, expertise and tradition. For me it has been truly an adventure conjuring up the taste, smell, sound and warmth of Greece. My eyes have been opened to some of the most delicious wines from Greece by Kevin @vinagogowines. Who knew that in 2024 when I go out to eat, I will often choose a Greek wine and let me tell you it has never disappointed!
We’re bringing the flavours and tastes of Greece to you this month on market HQ – we have Greek cheese from @MaltbyandGreek paired with honey and Greek wine from @vinagogowines. Buttercup is trying out her best Greek Goddess look, so pop by for a selfie with Chiswick’s favourite cow who will be joined this month by a new addition! Join us on HQ and find yourself transported in in one mouthful to this sunny, gorgeous corner of the Mediterranean.
New this month
@the_wild_room are bringing us a carefully curated selection of wild mushrooms, truffles, foraged vegetables and fruits. The Wild Room hunts out foragers and gatherers who know their local areas, pick the best and they bring together a selection of some of the most extraordinary wild flavours from around the world.
I’m writing this from The French Alps (home of Beaufort, Reblochon and Tomme cheeses) and one of my favourite winter dishes is an oozingly cheesey tartiflette with my added twist of sauteed wild mushrooms tucked into the layers of potato, bacon and Reblochon (utterly delicious and the combo of mushrooms and Reblochon is fantastic).
Or what about trying grated summer truffle from The Wild Room on fresh pasta with @biancamorastall Red Cow Parmesan which Ewa brings to the market each month? I do so love ‘Cheesewick’! I for one cannot wait to see what new and interesting pairings I can create in my kitchen with offerings from The Wild Room.
We are thrilled to welcome @maliks_honey. After a summer spent in the mountain regions of the Mediterranean tasting raw honey straight from hives, Maliks Honey was born. The honey was so delicious, unlike any other honey they had tasted, that on return they decided to search out the very best British honey out there and promote raw honey to a wider audience.
Those of us that have been coming to the market for a while know what a great partner honey is to cheese – for me my favourite way to enjoy strong salty Roquefort is by drizzling over a good amount of sweet floral honey – WOW! I can’t wait to try Maliks selection – choose from Soft set, Ling Heather, Orange Blossom or honeys infused with cinnamon, turmeric, ginger or Celtic salt. I am so excited about these flavours.
Sometimes we think of cheese as a satisfyingly wintery food, but I love the delicate cheeses of the summer – fresh goat’s cheeses from @thefrenchcomte with nuts and salad or mozzarella from @lalatteriauk and tomatoes from @iowtomatoes – simply a classic!
What about the twist of classic Alp Blossom paired with one of @love_fermented summer kimchees or hand-smoked trout from @berkstrout with 6-month-old feta from @maltbyandgreek whipped with some yoghurt? My mouth is watering just thinking about it all.
On a summer evening there is nothing better than a sharing platter – casual warm outdoor eating with friends and family and quite frankly there is no better place than @chiswickcheesemarket to fill your basket with the best of the best.
I’ll be driving back from the French Alps in time for it so see you there!
